How to Sing From the Stomach Properly


From where do you think singing comes? If you say the throat, you're only partially right! All talking and singing involves more than just the voice box; you need to sing from deep within you in order for your singing to be deep and layered. So you want to know how to sing from the stomach? How can you make sure this sound comes from that deep and that you won't fall back on the habit of singing just from the throat or worse yet, from the sinuses?
First, remember that singing from the stomach really means singing from the diaphragm. Like other muscles and elements of the body, it needs to be exercised, warmed up, and ready to support your singing. The only way you can do this is if you practice your deep breathing every single day. Breathing deeply should become something you do automatically not just when you're thinking about it. As you exhale, count as high as you can. Try to increase how high you can count while exhaling because this will strengthen your diaphragm and the stomach and back muscles. Open your throat up wide. You can also practice singing while you keep your mouth open, as if you have something in your mouth that prevents it from closing. This won't typically sound very pretty but it's a necessary practice.
When learning how to sing from the stomach, practice in front of a mirror. Really see how your whole body gets involved and how you need to keep the entire body open and ready to sing. This is the only way you'll avoid singing from the throat or the sinus passages, which will give you that nasally sound you want to avoid. If you do this, your singing will improve greatly in many different ways.
